Power of Siberia Gas Pipeline Started Operating with Anti-Corrosion Coating Manufactured by METACLAY JSC

Today, the 1st section of The Power of Siberia (Sila Sibiri) gas pipeline was launched via a teleconference with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. A 2200-kilometer line connected the Chayandinskoye Field in Yakutia with China on the border with Blagoveshchensk. The designed capacity of the pipeline is 38 billion cubic meters per year.

This is a significant date for our team, as steel pipes of The Power of Siberia are insulated with polyethylene anti-corrosion coating manufactured by METACLAY JSC. First, a three-layer coating system of METALEN PE-1 (polyethylene) and METALEN APE-1 (adhesive) was used for the gas pipeline, and then a monolayer system based on METALEN PE-21 was introduced which innovatively combines polyethylene and adhesive and thereby saves time and installation resources of Gazprom PJSC. METACLAY JSC was the first in the world to start producing monolayer coating as an alternative to three-layer one. Efficiency of the coating has been confirmed by STO Gazprom system, as well as by tests at pipe plants. METACLAY monolayer coating provides impact resistance, reliable protection against moisture and resistance to temperature drops from +80 to -80 degrees Celsius. The advantages of the monolayer coating made it the main polymer anti-corrosion material for insulation of the main gas pipeline.

Partners of METACLAY JSC supplied steel pipes with METALEN PE-21, METALEN PE-1, and METALEN APE-1 materials for construction of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant OJSC, Izhora Pipe Plant JSC (Severstal PJSC), and Vyksa Metallurgical Plant OJSC (OMK) are among them.

Along with polymer anti-corrosion coating for the gas pipeline, another METACLAY JSC product was also used – LITOMET electrically insulating stands – to reduce the influence of stray currents, prevent occurrence of galvanic, crevice corrosion and provide protection from mechanical damage.

METACLAY is proud to participate in the strategic federal project for construction of the Power of Siberia. This tremendous experience and responsibility has allowed us to acquire expert knowledge and resources for development and commercialization of materials and technologies for the pipe industry.
